Winter Art Classes at Florida Tech's Renee Foosaner Education Center

winter art classes

Early registration is now underway for winter art classes and workshops at Florida Institute of Technology’s Renee Foosaner Education Center in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne.

The new term, which will feature one- to three-day workshops and multi-week classes, starts Jan. 14 and runs through March 20. Pre-registration is required for all classes and workshops.

Workshops include “Ceramics and Glass Fusion” Jan. 24–25; “Ceramic Brushstroke Techniques” on Jan. 27; and “Handbuilding with Colored Clays with Mitch Lyons” Feb. 21–22.

Classes include a range of subjects for adults and children, such as homeschool art group, surrealism in film and art, found object art, pottery, figure drawing, fiber arts and acrylic and oil painting.

Among the new offerings will be “Jump Start Your Creativity and Draw!” with instructor Jean Thomas. This class embraces drawing as a process of discovery, not necessarily a learned skill. Students will explore different landscapes and subject matter, on and off the museum's campus. Students should be prepared to spend time in the museum gallery, outdoors and at other locations.

Also new will be “Surrealism in Film and Art,” where instructor and working artist Stephen Lomazzo will introduce students to themes of surrealism through a combination of gallery tours, lecture, hands-on art activities and short film. This class is held in conjunction with the museum’s upcoming exhibition, “Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray,” which opens at the Foosaner Art Museum on Jan. 10, 2015. The exhibition features photographic portraits of surrealist artist Frida Kahlo.

Classes and workshops will be held at the Renee Foosaner Education Center, 1520 Highland Ave., unless otherwise noted.

Details, schedules, class policies and prices can be found on Foosaner Art Museum’s website, foosanerartmuseum.org, under the “classes” tab at the top of the page. Informational brochures will be available at the art museum and education center beginning Nov. 15.

Prospective students who sign up for classes by Dec. 20 will receive an early-registration discount of up to 10 percent. Museum members also receive discounts on class tuition.
