Meet Chompers, a 10-foot shark, and Octavia, a 9-foot octopus, and then watch as a giant anemone reef comes to life. These are just three of the 10 larger-than-life, handcrafted art sculptures coming to the Zoo for a limited time. Washed Ashore Project features astonishing art installations made exclusively from marine debris that will open your eyes and leave you with a lasting impression.
Environmental artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi founded Washed Ashore Project to educate and create awareness of ocean debris and plastic pollution and its effect on marine life species. Community members of all ages worked together to clean up beaches and process the debris into art supplies to construct giant sculptures of sea life most affected by plastic pollution. They’ve worked together to collect more than 12 tons of marine debris in just fivve years and have created more than 60 sculptures.
The spectacular Washed Ashore Project exhibit aligns perfectly with the Zoo’s mission of ‘Wildlife Conservation through Education and Participation.’ We are dedicated to protecting our waterways by supporting numerous conservation projects that work to clean up those waterways, assure they stay clean and ensure no harm comes to wildlife. This project provides yet another avenue to educate the community about a major environmental crisis in both an artistic and incredibly impactful way.
Washed Ashore Project will be located off the Zoo’s dinosaur trail in Wild Florida and the temporary exhibit is included with Zoo admission. The experience not only includes a chance to see these 10 beautiful art installations, but also showcases what happens to debris that doesn’t get recycled or that doesn’t make it to the landfills. You’ll learn all about ocean stewardship, responsible consumer habits and how EVERY action counts to help save our seas.
