Information

Researchers consistently find that virtual worlds provide positive outcomes that equal or exceed face-to-face activities. Virtual worlds offer an excellent way for students to learn about the phenomena that form the basis of science and engineering. Join us for an exploration of how virtual reality and virtual worlds can improve STEM learning and teaching.

The 2017 Virtual Worlds Education Conference organizers invite attendees to present outcomes of their implementation of virtual worlds in STEM courses, research concerning teaching and learning in virtual worlds, and best practices for designing these virtual worlds. The conference agenda provides for in-depth research presentations, hands-on technology demonstrations, engaging panel discussions, and activities that enable attendees to explore and develop new ideas about virtual worlds in STEM education. The 2017 VWE Conference is hosted by Florida Institute of Technology (Florida Tech) in beautiful Melbourne, Florida.

We plan for in-depth presentations by about 25 practitioners, education researchers, and industry representatives. Experts in curriculum design and assessment will help STEM educators understand how to develop research programs and projects with achievable, measurable learning objectives. Industry experts, such as programmers and representatives from companies developing virtual reality hardware and software, will share their technical knowledge and learn about the needs of educators who use their services and products. Attendees can demonstrate their virtual worlds used for education and view those of others in a technology showcase. Panel discussions will explore the potential future directions of virtual world technology and ways that we can overcome the challenges of teaching in this environment. Speakers will join teams to develop a mock project proposal based on ideas developed during the conference. See the Speakers page for more information about this innovative activity.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

• STEM educators using virtual worlds (including virtual and augmented reality and virtual learning environments),

• Researchers and vendors developing education-related tools and products for virtual worlds, and

• Students, administrators, and educators interested in learning more about how virtual worlds can improve STEM education.

Most events are open to the public so we invite anybody interested in technology and its applications in education to attend. There is no registration fee for participating or attending.

We look forward to seeing you in Florida for the 2017 STEM Virtual Worlds Education Conference!
