Kristin Naigus, oboe

BARBER: Adagio for Strings
PUTS: Concerto for Oboe and Strings (Southeast US Premiere)
SHCHEDRIN: Carmen Suite for Strings & Percussion

The Space Coast Symphony strings and percussion present Carmen in a way like you have never heard it before. Opening the program is Samuel Barber’s moving and searing Adagio for Strings. Kristin Naigus joins the SCSO to perform Pulitzer Prize winning composer Kevin Puts’ Concerto for Oboe and Strings. Scored for solo oboe and small orchestra, the concerto recalls both the spirit and contrapuntal textures of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, particularly the sixth. It is a dynamic and beautiful work that will highlight Naigus’ sensitivity and technical control. The concert closes with Rodion Shchedrin’s romp for strings and percussion, the Carmen Suite. While all of the melodies in Shchedrin’s Carmen-Suite come from Bizet, the unusual scoring for strings and percussion, the sequence and combination of melodies, and the rhythmic and harmonic twists and turns belong entirely to Shchedrin. The result is a work that is both familiar and fresh.
