Rise Above Plastics

Rise Above Plastics

The Surfrider Foundation - Sebastian Inlet Chapter, the Sea Turtle Conservancy and the town of Melbourne Beach, Florida have partnered together to Rise Above Plastics.

It is estimated that there are 100 million tons of plastic in the oceans around the world. Over 100 million marine animals are killed each year due to plastic debris in our oceans. Sea turtles are especially susceptible.

To help reduce the amount of plastic, the Town Commission of Melbourne Beach has approved one of a first of it’s kind resolution to “promote efforts to voluntarily reduce the use of plastic bags." Residents and local merchants have embraced this effort.

Tune in to WFIT Monday, July 6 at 1:00 pm, Todd Kennedy will talk with 2 people who have spearheaded this campaign. The Surfrider Sebastian Inlet Chapter Vice Chair Eric Schwarze and Melbourne Beach Mayor Jim Simmons.
