Japanese Art Studio Night at Renee Foosaner Education Center

Tuesday, May 5, 2015

Parent/Child Workshop (5-7 y.o.) “Fun with Koinobori!”
The parent/child team will create a carp-shaped windsock known as “Koinobori”! Students will design a “scale”-shaped block from soft block printing material and apply it repetitively to outdoor-safe fabric that has been cut in the shape of a fish. After adding details like eyes, fins, and a tail the Koinobori will be ready to hang and “swim” through the breeze!

Children’s Workshop (8-10 y.o.) “Woodblock Printing and Origami”
Children will design their own Japanese woodblock print design using scratch foam and experiment with printing. Block printing is a great way to produce multiples of the same image and allows for variation in color and backgrounds. An origami lesson and demo will also be presented.

Cost: $40 for museum members/ $50 for non-members. Price includes all materials and a Japanese snack!

Instructor: Heather Everett

How to sign-up: Pre-registration is required. You can register online at www.foosanerartmuseum.org or call the Renee Foosaner Education Center at (321) 674-8923.

Origami Instructor: Pierson Mast
Pierson is in 4th grade at Gemini Elementary. He has a passion for folding and teaching others his art. Pierson began practicing the art of Origami at the age of 4. Since then he has mastered numerous origami books and now creates his own original folds. His work has been featured in a show at the Melbourne Beach Library and at his school Gemini Elementary. His work was also featured at the district art fair. Last June Pierson attended the Origami USA convention in New York City and took classes with Robert Lang and Jeremy Shafer along with many other origami masters. He will teach a short lesson to both age groups for this workshop.

This workshop is offered in conjunction with the museum’s current exhibition of Japanese woodcuts, “Ukiyo-e to Shin Hanga: Japanese Woodcuts from the Syracuse University Art Collection” on view March 28 – May 24, 2015.
