Florida Institute of Technology presents the lecture “Bamboo and Japanese Culture” on Tuesday, March 17 in the Denius Student Center’s Hartley Room as part of the Friends of Textiles Lecture Series.
The lecture is presented by Reiko Nishioka, a native of Kyoto, Japan, and the retired director of education at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach, Fla. She served as its director of education for 20 years and continues to research and teach about Japanese culture.
The public event begins with a reception at 5:15 p.m. The lecture starts at 6 p.m.
The lecture is presented in conjunction with the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts’ current exhibit, Modern Twist: Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Art, which will be on view through April 25.
Nishioka received her master’s degree in museum leadership from the Bank Street College of Education in New York and has spent terms as the artist in residence at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
The cost for the lecture is $10 for the general public and free for Friends of Textiles members and full-time Florida Tech students, faculty and staff with Florida Tech ID.
