Water, Technology, Civil War Among Topics
Florida Institute of Technology’s Lifelong Scholar Society has announced its summer lecture series, which features six presentations from university faculty and staff on a variety of topics from May through August.
The hour-long lectures run from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday evenings and conclude with a half-hour of informal conversation with the guest speaker. Coffee and pies from Joan’s Perfect Pies in Eau Gallie will be served.
Lectures are held at either the Harris Community Center at Foosaner Art Museum, 1463 Highland Ave. in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne, or the Center for Aeronautics and Innovation, 1050 W. NASA Blvd. in Melbourne.
Here’s a look at the lineup:
- May 28: Origins of Earth’s Water: A 4-Billion Year Story presented by George Maul, professor of oceanography and former head of the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems. Location: Harris Community Auditorium.
- June 11: Safe Computing presented by Richard Ford, Harris Professor for Computer Science in Assured Information and head of the Computer Sciences and Cybersecurity Department. This presentation introduces the audience to the idea of safe computing and provides real-world examples of how to make home and business environments safer through more responsible computer use. Location: Center for Aeronautics and Innovation.
- June 25: Trends in Technology: Now, New and Next presented by Cindy Schmitt, senior director of continuing education. Schmitt, whose current research focuses on instructional technology in the online learning environment, will explore the rapidly changing technology that is changing how we work, play and live. Location: Harris Community Auditorium.
- July 23: The History of Florida Tech Athletics and Highlights of the 2014 Season, presented by Athletic Director Bill Jurgens. Location: Harris Community Auditorium.
- August 13: Florida’s Civil War presented by Robert Taylor, history professor and president emeritus of the Florida Historical Society and co-author of “Florida in the Civil War.” Location: Center for Aeronautics and Innovation.
- August 27: Monkeysort: What Exactly Do Computer Scientists Do? presented by Keith Gallagher, associate professor of software engineering and director of Florida Tech’s Software Engineering Program. Location: Harris Community Auditorium.
Tickets for admission are $20 per person, $10 for Lifelong Scholar Society members and free to Florida Tech students, faculty and staff.
