Maestro Aaron Collins is giving his regards to Broadway.
Conductor Collins and the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra launch their 2017-18 musical season with a presentation of the biggest stage and screen hits of the last 70 years. A sparkling program of Broadway Showstoppers will be featured Saturday, June 17 ( 7 p.m.) at the Scott Center for the Performing Arts and on June 18 (3 p.m.) at the Community Church of Vero Beach.
Led by Collins, who is also Artistic Director, the SCSO will perform hit after hit from Broadway’s storied past and present. Journey from the glamour of the silver screen to the excitement of Broadway’s great hits featuring show tunes from The Music Man, Grease!, Phantom of the Opera, The King and I, Oklahoma, West Side Story, Evita, Tommy, Jesus Christ Superstar and Chicago and much more.
The rich orchestration will be a reminder of how popular music can sometimes evolve into a symphonic classic. Collins has no doubts about the popularity of the musical fare. In 2016, Collins won the Richard A. Stark Award for cultural leadership from the Cultural Council of Indian River County.
"We have chosen some of the very best music ever written for Broadway for this concert," said Collins. “You know, those songs that when they’re sung in shows, they stop everything and bring the house down. The big hits. Some of the pieces are a half-century old, but still as fresh and enjoyable as the day they were written."
