This Breaking Down Walls event will focus on acquiring knowledge about different religions as well as facilitating dialogue between women who have different religious beliefs. The event will take place on Sunday May 21, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm at Groundswell Startups in Melbourne, Florida.
The Breaking Down Walls event will begin with a panel discussion. Panealists Rabbi Hickman, Sally Sabawi, and a local pastor will explain the brief history and basic beliefs of the religion they practice (Judaism, Islam, and Christianity respectively) and answer questions from the audience. After the questions are over, there will be one-to-one conversations where participants will find someone they do not know of another religious belief, introduce themselves, and engage in personal conversation. The event will end with a potluck dinner. Please bring a dish to share if you would like.
This event is for women only. Please feel free to invite your friends, coworkers, and family. Women of any religious belief (including none) are invited. If you would like to participate, please CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. I hope you will join us as we Break Down Walls on Sunday, May 21st! MISSION The Breaking Down Walls project aims to increase personal dialogue between Muslims and non-Muslims in order to: provide an opportunity for individuals to learn from each other, foster personal human connection and recognition of commonalities among people of different faiths, and decrease Islamophobia and the hateful rhetoric and dangerous behaviors being directed toward innocent Muslim citizens in the United States.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT The number of people who are afraid of, or show hatred towards, Muslims is increasing with sixty-one percent of Americans currently reporting that they view Muslims negatively1. Islamophobia in America and throughout the world is on the rise. Islamophobia is defined as “an exaggerated fear, hatred, and hostility toward Islam and Muslims that is perpetuated by negative stereotypes”. More information
