Brass-Hoppers Trio Concert

A nationally renowned trio featuring trumpet, trombone and piano will bring its traditional classical music and jazz-inspired arrangements of standards and popular tunes to Florida Institute of Technology for a free concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Gleason Performing Arts Center.

The Brass-Hoppers Trio is comprised of Mary Elizabeth Bowden on trumpet, Milana Strezeva on piano and Donna Parkes on trombone.

The Illinois-born Bowden holds degrees from The Curtis Institute of Music and Yale School of Music and won the 2012 International Women’s Brass Conference Trumpet Competition.

The Moldovan-American pianist Strezeva received her bachelor and master degrees from the Juilliard School, and is a founding member of the award-winning Manhattan Piano Trio, one of the most creative and dynamic young ensembles in America.

Australian trombonist Parkes has been principal trombone of the Louisville Orchestra since 2008 and has been principal trombone of the Colorado Music Festival since 2009. She has also performed with many symphonies and orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, London Symphony, Singapore Symphony, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

“The Florida Tech Music Program is thrilled to host a trio featuring brass musicians, an exciting addition to the guest vocalists, pianists and percussionists that headlined our concerts in recent years,” said Kevin Burke, director of music programs at Florida Tech.

Earlier in the day, the trio will give a community outreach presentation to the Melbourne High School Concert Band led by Joshua Sall. Scott Apelgren, owner of The Horn Section and president of the Melbourne Chamber Music Society Board of Directors, is sponsoring the Community Outreach.

And at 3:30 p.m. on Jan.  17th at Gleason, Florida Tech and high school students will perform for the trio in a Master Class. This is open to the public.

“We are honored to partner with the local school district, businesses and community organizations in welcoming these up-and-coming musicians,” Burke said. “Collaboration is key to bringing world-class talent to the Space Coast.”
