The social scientist Robert Terry wrote: “To be white in America is not to have to think about it.” Perhaps that is the best definition of “White Privilege.”

Beginning with slavery, America has been plagued by racial inequality, bigotry, hate crimes and discrimination.  If we are ever going to heal these wounds, we’ve just got to face them head-on, and commit to build a fairer, friendlier, and more just society.

Few periods of country music history have received more popular attention (or rock press) than the outlaw movement. Decades later, its towering personas — Willie and Waylon chief among them — remain a subject of fascination, immortalized as leathery, long-haired stoners and speed freaks who operated entirely outside the law of the country music establishment. By the time the movement had run its course, it had become a marketing tool for the industry.

Pianist, composer and bandleader Arturo O'Farrill was born into Afro-Cuban jazz royalty but growing up he rejected his famous musical heritage. Now, he travels the world sharing his late father Chico O'Farrill's legacy as a principal architect of the mash up of jazz and Afro-Cuban music in the late 1940s.

On the acknowledgments page of her new short story collection, Florida, Lauren Groff thanks Florida, where she lives and which she calls the "sunniest and strangest of states."

Strange this collection certainly is, but sunny? Not so much. These are Southern Gothic-inflected tales of hurricanes, humidity and sudden sheets of tropical rain that create sinkholes and send snakes, raccoons and palmetto bugs writhing and running into living rooms for shelter.

This year we are adding a foil surfing division to continue our tradition of recognizing innovative trends in surfing. There will also be a Surfrider Team Challenge event.
